Travelling to Sri Lanka from Australia: ETA and documents checklist
, 4 min read
Before you fly to Sri Lanka, check that your entry paperwork is in order. For most visitors that means an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Here’s a general overview of what to prepare.
What is the Sri Lanka ETA?
The ETA is an online authorisation that most foreign visitors need before arriving in Sri Lanka for tourism, visiting family or short business trips. It’s applied for online through Sri Lanka’s official ETA website.
Fees, exemptions and free-visa schemes for particular countries have changed several times in recent years. Always check the current rules on the official site before you travel, or ask us to check for your passport.
Dual citizens
If you hold Sri Lankan dual citizenship, you may be able to enter on your Sri Lankan passport or with your dual citizenship certificate instead of an ETA. Make sure you travel with the documents that match how you intend to enter.
Documents checklist
For most trips, have these ready before you head to the airport:
- Passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with blank pages
- ETA approval, or dual citizenship documents if they apply to you
- Return or onward ticket
- Proof of where you’re staying, such as a hotel booking or family address
- Travel insurance details
- For non-citizens of Australia: a visa that lets you return to Australia
Travelling with children
Every child needs their own passport and, unless exempt, their own ETA. If a child is travelling with only one parent, carrying a signed consent letter from the other parent can help avoid questions at the airport.
