How to prepare for the Australian citizenship test
, 4 min read
The citizenship test is one of the last steps before becoming an Australian citizen. With a few weeks of steady preparation, most people feel confident on the day.
What the test involves
The test has 20 multiple-choice questions based on the official resource, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. You need 75% to pass, and you must answer all five questions about Australian values correctly.
Most applicants aged 18 to 59 under the general eligibility rules need to sit the test.
What to study
Our Common Bond covers four main areas:
- Australia and its people
- Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights and liberties
- Government and the law in Australia
- Australian values
A simple four-week plan
Spread your study out rather than cramming:
- Week 1: Read Our Common Bond from start to finish
- Week 2: Re-read the values and government sections, making notes
- Week 3: Do practice questions and review anything you get wrong
- Week 4: Focus on the Australian values questions until you get them right every time
On the day
Bring the original identity documents listed in your appointment letter, arrive early, and read each question carefully. Values questions are often worded to test whether you understand the principle, not just the words.
