Citizenship
The citizenship residence requirement, explained simply
, 4 min read
The residence requirement trips up more citizenship applicants than anything else, usually because of overseas travel. Here’s how it works in general terms.
The basic rule
Under the general eligibility rules, you generally need to have:
- Lived in Australia on a valid visa for the 4 years immediately before applying
- Been a permanent resident for the last 12 months of that period
- Been away from Australia for no more than 12 months in total in those 4 years
- Been away for no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying
Why travel matters
Every trip overseas counts towards your absences, including short holidays. Someone who has lived here for five years might still not qualify if a long trip home falls inside the 4-year window, or if they’ve been away for more than 90 days in the last year.
If you’re close to the limit, waiting a few months before applying can move a long trip outside the window.
Check your dates first
The Department of Home Affairs has an online residence calculator. Enter your visa grant dates and every departure and return date. Your travel history can be requested if you’re unsure of past dates.
We can go through your dates with you before you apply, so you don’t pay the application fee too early. See the steps from application to ceremony.
